The Chinese Shar Pei is genetically
one of the oldest dog breeds in existence. From genetic testing it appears that it is a
mutated third generation Grey Wolf. Shar
Pei is possibly distantly related to the Chow Chow breed. It is originally from China. It was originally bred as a guard
dog for the imperial palace.
Shar Pei is between 18 and 20 inches
tall; with a maximum weight between seven and eleven pounds. This breed has two
styles of coats. One is short and rough (Horse
type). The other is long and rough
(Brush type). It comes in many different colors. This breed has folds in the skin that make it
look distinctive.
This type of dog gets very attached to
the family it is with. It is small and
very affectionate to familiar faces. It is a member of the Non-Sporting group
of dogs. Shar Pei makes very good guard
dogs.
