poodles

Poodles originated in Germany in the 1500’s. They were breed to be water retrievers and belong to the Non-sports or Toy Group. Group placement depends on size. When translated into English the name means puddle dog.

Poodles are used in bird hunting, dog shows, and as pets. They come in miniature, standard and toy sizes.  The Toy size has a maximum height of 10 inches and weight of 9 pounds.  The Miniature size has a maximum height of 15 inches and weight of 15 pounds.  The Standard size has a maximum height over 15 inches and Wight of 70 pounds.

In order to make poodles more versatile in the water hunters used to cut their coats leaving hair around the joints and other vital areas.  This became a motif for people who owned dogs.  May people who own poodles and don’t hunt still get there dogs trimmed in this manner.

As pets go a poodle is a very good choice. They adapt well to apartments.  They are very intelligent and take easily to obedience training.  They are often taught to do tricks.
